Human Givens Therapy

Strange name!

It arose from a “starting from scratch” approach where a group of people got together and discussed what it means to be a thriving happy person. Just as a plant needs certain conditions to thrive, so we as humans do too. We obviously have physical needs. We also have emotional needs: for attention, love, control, connection, self-esteem, privacy and meaning. Fortunately we were born with the resources to get our needs met. Together these needs and resources make up the human givens, so hence the name.

So now what?

If our needs are not being met or we are misusing our innate resources, then we are unlikely to thrive. All behaviour that we find difficult or challenging in ourselves and others arises from trying to get needs met. If there is something difficult or challenging for you,  you might want to talk it over and see what can be done.

Don’t like therapy or the idea of it?

A therapist is not someone with all the answers or someone whose own life is perfect. A Human Givens Therapist has been taught about and continues to learn about the brain and how it functions and human emotions and how they work or don’t work for us.
When a person is lost in a wood and can’t see a path out, the therapist is the guy in the helicopter who can see the paths because he is circling above the wood. The pilot can communicate with the person in the wood and help guide him or her out. The two work as a team.
